Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova was born on 21 June 1881 to Sergei Nikolaevich Goncharov and Ekaterina Ilinichna Belyaeva in the town of Negaevo in Russia.1 Her father was an architect and mathematician.2 Her mother’s family had close links with the priesthood, and her maternal grandfather taught at the Moscow Theological Academy.3 Raised and educated largely by her mother and maternal Goncharova adds a national sentiment with her inclusion of the Russian donkey, and furthermore and most originally, gives the work a religious dimension. The overall meaning of the painting is in fact far removed from Cézanne and Matisse, whose works likely inspired its brushstroke and composition. Goncharova and her counterpart, Larionov, were continuously harassed for their artwork and the way they expressed themselves. However, the influence of Russian Futurism is much in evidence in Goncharova's later paintings.

Goncharova was a radical both in art and life. She and Larionov lived together for decades as an unmarried couple. (They finally married in 1955 to ensure that whoever survived the other could inherit his or her paintings.) Larionov was very interested in tattooing.

It was as a synthesis of those movements that Goncharova and Larionov conceived of Rayonism in 1912, an approach that sought to portray in two dimensions the spatial qualities of reflected light.
